Sam Kendricks, reigning USATF Outdoor champion, placed second in the World Showdown elite invitational men's pole vault at the 110th Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa. The competition was moved from outdoors at Drake Stadium to indoors because of inclement weather. Kendricks, who hadn't competed since February, cleared 19-0.25 (5.80m) on his first attempt, but suffered his first career setback in five meetings against South Dakota junior Chris Nilsen, who won with a clearance at 19-2.25 (5.85m).
