DES MOINES, IOWA - Good things came in threes for several athletes during the high school competition Thursday in the 111th running of the Drake Relays presented by Xtream powered by Mediacom.
Three Relays records fell in a sunny daylong session devoted entirely to prep competition.
Ames captured three relay titles, with Cameron Moon and Morgan Engels running on all three teams. Moon anchored the sprint medley and 4x400, while Engels brought the Little Cyclones home in the 4x200.
Carlisle's Ainsley Erzen also was an individual double winner, racing to victories in the 400 and 800. She set a Relays record of 56.28 in the 400, which was run for the second year at Drake. Keokuk's Miracle Ailes repeated her Relays title in the high jump and finished third in the long jump.
Ballard sophomore Shewaye Johnson blew away the field in the 3000, finishing in 9:46.88 to win by more than 12 seconds. That ranks seventh on the state's all-time list. She appeared to be headed for a victory in the 1500 before Iowa City Liberty's Ashlyn Keeney passed her with a strong kick.
TJ Tomlyanovich of Cedar Falls and Titus Christiansen of Southeast Polk each came away with three championships in the boys division.
Tomlyanovich won the 400, ran the second leg on the winning 4x400 relay and anchored the 4x800 unit to a victory. The Tigers' 4x400 foursome set a Relays record of 3:16.67. Christiansen won the 100 and ran the second leg on the first-place 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams.
ADM's Nate Mueller was the only individual double winner, racing to impressive wins in the 1600 and 3200. His time of 9:09.88 put him at No. 17 on the state's all-time list.
Drew Bartels of Cedar Rapids Kennedy showed his versatility, winning the 110 hurdles, running the second leg on the shuttle hurdle relay team that set a Relays record of 57.95 and finishing third in the long jump, an event in which he remains the season leader. Long-striding Aniey Akok of Ames came from behind with 200 meters to go to win the 800 and anchored the Little Cyclones to a victory in the distance medley.
Another versatile athlete, football star Cooper DeJean of OABCIG, won the long jump and finished third in the 100. DeJean quarterbacked OABCIG to state championships in each of the last two years and will play at Iowa in the fall.
Waukee's Evan Correll won the Relays' first coed wheelchair 400 in 51.96, which is the state's all-time best. Correll also is the state's all-time leader in the 100, 200 and 800 wheelchair events.
Thursday at the Blue Oval continues with the annual Distance Carnival starting at 6 p.m.
