DES MOINES, Iowa – A one-two-three finish by Notre Dame in the women’s 5000 meters and the fastest Drake Relays men’s 10K time in 36 years highlighted action during the Thursday night’s Distance Carnival at the 111th running of the Drake Relays, presented by Xtream powered by Mediacom.

Notre Dame senior Erin Archibeck led the way for the Fighting Irish as she passed teammate Maddy Denner on the final lap to win the 5000 meters in 16:12.92. Denner, who led most of the race, finished second in 16:16.40 and teammate Katie Rose Blachowicz was third in 16:19.21.

Minnesota State-Moorhead’s Nasir Yusuf dropped the hammer in the men’s 10,000 meters, earning a  time of 29:12.04, which was the fastest winning time in the event at the Relays since Iowa State’s Yobes Ondieki ran in 28:48.71 in 1985. That time also ranks No. 4 on this year’s NCAA Division II list.

In her outdoor 10,000 meter debut, South Dakota State Leah Hansen took down the field, crossing the line in 34:03.03 to win the university women’s race by more than 12 seconds.

Alec Kray of Augustana (S.D.) enjoyed a smashing outdoor debut in the 5000 meters, winning the university men’s title in 13:56.24.

A pair of Iowa natives claimed Relay Flags in the steeplechase as Iowa State’s Abby Caldwell won the women’s steeplechase in a personal-best of 10:05.62 while South Dakota State’s Joshua Yeager also set a PR in the men’s race of 8:48.70 en route to winning the event.

Action resumes on the Blue Oval on Friday at 8:30 a.m. with the college men’s javelin, college women’s discus and college men’s long jump. The first track event will be the college women’s 5000 at 9 a.m.
