INFORMATION REGARDING THE DRAKE RELAYS SILVER LEVEL STATUS

World Athletics (formerly the IAAF), the international governing body for track and field, has announced that the Drake Relays has been awarded “Silver” status in the World Athletics Continental Tour, a series of the world’s best meets outside of the Diamond League.

The Continental Tour was organized to elevate the sport of track and field and will be divided into three levels - Gold, Silver and Bronze.  The status will be determined by the quality of competition and prize money available to the athletes.  The Drake Relays was the first meet recognized with any of the three levels of designation in continental North America.  There will be one other meet in Florida that meets the Silver level criteria.

A new future for track and field has been unveiled with World Athletics reshaping the Olympic qualifying procedures. In March 2019, World Athletics announced significantly higher “A” standards across all events. Athletes without an “A” standard must accrue world ranking points by competing in Gold, Silver and Bronze level meets that will build their points in the new ranking system to qualify for the upcoming Olympic Games.

The Drake Relays Continental Tour Silver designation will elevate the prestige of the Drake Relays, especially among elite athletes and those attempting to qualify for an Olympic team.  Professional and collegiate athletes will need to participate at the Drake Relays in the elite level events to earn points toward their ranking for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.
