DES MOINES, Iowa -- The high school track and field season in Iowa is in full swing with hundreds of competitive efforts on display throughout the state. Prep athletes have already produced nearly 130 qualifiers for the 114th Drake Relays presented by Xtream powered by Mediacom.
 
A total of 63 boys' individual performances and relays are #BlueOvalBound thanks to achieving the Blue Standard, while 64 girls' individual performances and relays have met the necessary mark to advance to Drake Stadium. 
 
"The Iowa high school component is a cornerstone of the Drake Relays," Franklin P. Johnson Director of the Drake Relays Blake Boldon said. "For the first time in 114 editions of America's Athletic Classic we have three full time staff who competed in Drake Stadium as Iowa high school athletes. Each of us has a meaningful and personal connection to the high school division and these early season results have our entire staff excited for the competition between Iowa's best athletes later this month."
 
The Blue Standards were set by the Drake Relays committee based on historical data from the top 25 percent of accepted entries from past Drake Relays. For teams and athletes that do not attain a Blue Standard, the fields will be filled through the same protocol used in previous years and outlined in the Iowa High School Entry Information Packet. 
 
The girls' 3,000-meter field will again be daunting as six runners have already hit the required time. Relays veteran Addi Dorenkamp of West Des Moines Valley leads that event with the only sub-10-minute time logged thus far. The Spartans of Pleasant Valley are also well-represented in the first Blue Standard update with six different qualifiers among individual and relay events. The girls' relay slate is highlighted by a deep 4x100 field with 13 early qualifying groups. Waukee Northwest (48.11) and Sioux City East (49.52) have turned in the top times among those sprint teams.
 
The boys' side consists of a more evenly distributed qualifying group in the running events. At least five different athletes have qualified for each of the 400, 800, 1600, 3200, and 110 hurdles. A handful of boys runners have posted Blue Standard times in more than one race including Logan Fairchild of Ankeny in the 100 and 400 and his teammate, Ethan Zuber, in the 1600 and 3200. Mount Ayr's Ryce Reynolds has qualified in the 400 and 800, Western Dubuque's Quentin Nauman in the 800 and 3200, and Moustafa Tiea of Iowa City West in the 800 and 1600. Elsewhere, Sam Watts of Linn-Mar leads a half dozen shot put throwers and Western Dubuque's 4x100 relay team paces a tight group of eight foursomes.
 
Blue Standard qualifiers will continue to roll in as the Iowa high school track and field season progresses.
