On a weekend that would have showcased the 111th edition of the Drake Relays at Jim Duncan Track and Drake Stadium, lead announcer for the event Mike Jay along with sports publicist and former chairman of the Drake Relays executive committee Mike Mahon discuss with DyeStat editor Erik Boal what a year without the event has been like in Des Moines, Iowa. Jay and Mahon revisit some of the meet's most memorable performances, including several world records, along with highlighting many of the Iowa high school athletes who missed not only the Drake Relays, but the state championships due to the cancellation of the spring season as a result of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Jay and Mahon also reflect on the performance of recent NFL first-round pick Tristan Wirfs, who earned the Robert Kramme award after sweeping the boys shot put and discus throw for Mount Vernon High in 2017 at the Drake Relays, before going on to a successful football career as an offensive lineman at Iowa and being selected 13th overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. |
